Montréal’s Electrical Work Done Right

Voltage Montréal — Électriciens is a full-service electrical contractor proudly rooted in Le Plateau-Mont-Royal and serving the greater Montréal region. From the pre-war brick triplexes of Rosemont to the commercial strips of Ville-Marie and the established homes of Westmount, our licensed master electricians bring clean workmanship, honest pricing, and deep familiarity with Montréal’s unique building stock to every job.

We hold a valid RBQ licence and are members in good standing of the Corporation des Maîtres Électriciens du Québec (CMEQ). Every installation and repair we complete conforms to the Code de construction du Québec — Chapitre V, Électricité and all applicable Hydro-Québec service requirements.

Whether you are upgrading an aging knob-and-tube system in a 1920s duplex, adding an EV charging station before Montréal’s next winter, or simply replacing a tired panel, we listen carefully, quote fairly, and do the work properly the first time.

Our Services

⚡ Service Entrance & Panel Upgrades

Montréal’s older housing stock was never designed for today’s electrical demands. Many homes in the Plateau, Mile End, and Outremont still operate on 100-ampere services — undersized for modern appliances, heat pumps, and electric vehicle chargers. We handle the complete Hydro-Québec process for upgrading your service entrance from 100A to 200A (or 400A for larger properties), including coordination with Hydro-Québec for meter and mast work, installation of a new main distribution panel with certified breakers, and final inspection sign-off. A properly sized service protects your home, satisfies insurance requirements, and prepares you for the energy demands of the coming decades.

🔌 Rewiring — Knob-and-Tube & Aluminum Wiring

If your home was built before 1960, there is a strong chance it still contains knob-and-tube (K&T) wiring — open conductors routed through ceramic knobs and tubes with no ground wire and no capacity for grounded outlets. Insurers in Québec increasingly require written certification or full replacement before issuing or renewing a policy. We perform thorough assessments and can rewire individual circuits, full floors, or entire dwellings, working with walls open or, where feasible, through minimally invasive fishing techniques to protect your plaster and woodwork.

Homes built between roughly 1965 and 1980 may contain aluminum branch-circuit wiring, which carries its own fire risks at connections and devices. We retrofit aluminum wiring with approved anti-oxidant compound and CO/ALR-rated devices, or re-pull copper where warranted, bringing your home into full compliance.

🚗 EV Charging Station Installation

Electric vehicles are no longer a novelty on Montréal streets, and Québec winters make a reliable home charge point essential. We install Level 2 (240V) EV charging stations for single-family homes, duplexes, triplexes, and condo parking garages. We are experienced with the specific panel assessment and load calculation requirements that apply to multi-unit buildings, and we can advise on available provincial and federal rebate programs that may reduce your out-of-pocket cost. Whether you have chosen a brand-name EVSE or prefer our recommendation, we handle the full installation from panel to charger.

💡 Lighting — Indoor & Outdoor

Good lighting transforms a space and meaningfully reduces energy costs. We install and replace:

  • Recessed pot lights and LED retrofit kits
  • Under-cabinet and accent lighting
  • Bathroom vanity and wet-zone fixtures (to applicable CSA standards)
  • Exterior soffit, post, and security lighting
  • Dimmer circuits and smart-lighting integrations
  • Commercial and retail display lighting

We work with homeowners, architects, and interior designers to execute lighting plans that match the character of your space — from the high ceilings of a heritage Plateau flat to the clean lines of a newly renovated Mile End condo.

🔧 General Electrical Repairs & Additions

  • Outlet and switch replacement or addition
  • GFCI/AFCI circuit protection installation
  • Electric heating — baseboard, radiant floor, and convection unit wiring
  • Spa, hot tub, and pool equipment connections
  • Kitchen and laundry appliance circuits
  • Smoke and CO detector wiring
  • Automatic standby generator installation and transfer switch wiring
  • Electrical certification for insurance and real-estate transactions

Why Choose Voltage Montréal?

RBQ-Licensed & CMEQ Member

Every electrician on our team works under a valid Régie du Bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) licence. Our membership in the CMEQ means our work is held to the professional standards of Québec’s master electrician body — your assurance that permits are pulled, inspections are passed, and your installation is protected.

We Know Montréal Buildings

There is no substitute for hands-on experience with the specific challenges of Montréal’s building stock: the cramped service entrances of a Plateau triplex, the fuse panels tucked into damp Mile End basements, the load demands created by electric baseboard heating running flat-out through a Québec winter. We have seen these conditions countless times and we know how to address them properly.

Transparent Quoting

We provide written quotes before any work begins. We explain what we propose to do, why, and what it will cost — in plain language, in English or French. If unexpected conditions arise during the work, we discuss them with you before proceeding. No surprises on the final invoice.

Clean, Respectful Workmanship

We treat your home or business with care. We protect floors and finished surfaces, remove all debris, and leave the site in better condition than we found it. Our work is neat, our labelling is legible, and our installations are built to last.

Bilingual Service

We serve clients comfortably in English and French. Nous sommes heureux de vous servir dans les deux langues officielles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for electrical work in Montréal?

Most significant electrical work — panel replacements, service upgrades, new circuits, and rewiring — requires a permit issued through the Régie du bâtiment du Québec. As licensed master electricians, we obtain all required permits on your behalf. This protects you during insurance claims and property sales.

My insurer says my knob-and-tube wiring needs to be addressed. What are my options?

Insurers typically require either a full replacement of K&T wiring or, in some cases, a signed electrician’s certification that the system has been inspected, is in safe condition, and has not been modified improperly. We can perform the inspection and advise you on the most practical path forward for your specific home and insurer’s requirements.

How long does a 100A to 200A service upgrade take?

Most residential service upgrades are completed in a single working day. This includes coordinating the temporary power interruption with Hydro-Québec, replacing the service entrance cable and mast if required, installing the new panel, and arranging the required inspection. We handle the Hydro-Québec paperwork and scheduling as part of the service.

Can you install an EV charger in a triplex or condo building?

Yes. Multi-unit installations involve a load calculation for the entire building and sometimes a service upgrade at the building level before individual unit chargers can be added. We are experienced with the approval and metering considerations specific to Québec multi-unit properties and can guide you through the process.

I only need one outlet added. Is that too small a job?

No job is too small. We take pride in serving Montréal residents for straightforward repairs and additions as well as large renovation projects. A single outlet, a broken switch, a tripped breaker that won’t reset — call us and we will help.

Are your prices competitive?

We price our work fairly, reflecting the real cost of licensed labour, quality materials, and proper permitting. We are not the cheapest option in the city, and we do not try to be — but we do not believe you should pay more than necessary. We are always happy to explain our quote line by line.
